Biography

Tokumi Yokohira was born in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan on December 1, 1960. He received the B.E., M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in information and computer sciences from Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, in 1984, 1986 and 1989, respectively. From April 1989 to May 1990, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan. From May 1990 to December 1994 and from December 1994 to March 2000, he was a lecture and an associate professor, respectively, in the same department. From April 2000 to June 2003, he was an associate professor in the Department of Communication Network Engineering of the same faculty. Since July 2003, he has been a professor in the same department. His present research interests include fault tolerant and performance evaluation of computer communication networks, real-time communication in packet-switched networks and design algorithm of packet-switched networks with wavelength division multiplexing. He is a member of the IEEE Computer, Communication and Reliability Societies, the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers Inc. and Information Processing Society of Japan.

Subjects of Research

   - Highly Distributed Cloud Computing Environment

In cloud computing environments, QoS of network applications (NW-Apps) may degrade due to location factors such as significant distance between a server-side application (server) of a NW-App at a data center and a client-side application (client) at a client terminal. In order to shorten the distance and to improve the QoS, server migration services (SMSes) have been proposed. In SMSes, computers called work places (WPs) are deployed at various locations in a network, and servers can migrate between WPs to come close to their clients and attain better QoS. In this research theme, we investigate a server location decision algorithm that aims at keeping the QoS of NW-Apps as good as possible under the constraint that the server migration traffic has to be suppressed below an acceptable level.

   - Design of Virtual Networks

Network virtualization attracts attention with the development of virtualization technologies. In network virtualization, physical resources (e.g., CPUs of nodes and bandwidths on links) of a physical network are combined to form virtual resources, and by using a part of virtual resources, virtual networks are constructed. In this research theme, we investigate virtual network construction methods that aim at maximizing the number of constructed virtual networks or minimizing power consumptions.

   - Technologies to Upgrade the Speed of the Internet

TCP is a fundamental communication protocol, which has been used since the dawn of the Internet. In new network environments such as data center networks and multihomed network devices, TCP can be the bottleneck of data transmissions. In this research theme, we modify the TCP so that it can avoid throughput degradation called TCP incast in data center networks and we investigate multipath TCP for multihomed network devices.

   - Technologies to Increase the Fault Tolerance of the Internet

In the Internet, a failure of a router or a link results in the interruptions of an enormous number of communications. In this research theme, we investigate IP fast rerouting methods, which can keep the communications uninterrupted during the failure.

   - Design of Optical Networks

The power consumption of the Internet increases as its traffic volume increases. Therefore, it is indispensable to decrease its power consumption. Optical networks are considered as a promising solution to suppress the increase in the power consumption. In this research theme, we investigate medium access control methods and traffic engineering methods that aim at improving the power efficiency in optical networks.

   - P2P Live Streaming

Live streaming systems using peer-to-peer communication become popular because of high scalability and low delivery cost. In the systems, it is important to reduce inter-AS (Autonomous System) traffic volume because transit costs of ASes increase with an increase of inter-AS traffic volume. In this research theme, we investigate P2P overlay construction methods that aim at decreasing the inter-AS traffic volume.
